What is an eVisa?

An eVisa is an online record of your immigration status and includes your right to live and work in the UK. From the 31st December 2024, all holders of BRP’s (biometric residence cards) will need to register for an eVisa. If you fail to switch to an eVisa, you will not be able to prove your right to live or work in the United Kingdom or even travel.

The benefits of eVisas include:

  • they are secure and cannot be lost, stolen or tampered with, unlike a physical BRP
  • you will not need to wait for, or collect, a physical document after your application is decided
  • it will be quicker and easier to prove your status at the UK border, and share your status with third parties like employers and landlords

What is a UKVI account?

Global Law will create your UKVI account and make the application for your eVisa. By using Global Law, you will be assured that no mistakes are made, our experts will check the application before its submitted and inform you of when your permission to remain is available for access.

How will I use my UKVI account?

Once we have created your UKVI account and successfully apply for your eVisa you will be able to view the details of your eVisa online, for example your type of permission, when it expires and your conditions of stay in the UK.

Your eVisa will be linked to your passport in your UKVI account. You must keep your passport details up to date in your UKVI account. If you change your passport because it is lost or stolen, then you will need to update your UKVI account otherwise, you could have problems when travelling back to the UK from a trip abroad.

You will be able to share your immigration status information with third parties, such as employers or landlords, by generating a share code in your UKVI account, which will give them limited access to your immigration status information.

If you have a biometric residence permit

You must act now if you have a biometric residence permit (BRP) if it expires on the 31st December 2024. If your BRP expires after the 31st December 2024, you will still need to apply for your eVisa, however, you must still carry it when travelling until it expires.
