The process of obtaining a Schengen visa can be quite challenging, requiring a multitude of documents and securing an appointment to submit the application. However, the Council of the European Union (EU) is set to make it easier by digitizing the process!
With the new digital visa platform, applicants can now apply online, eliminating the need to visit the consulate or visa service providers. No more printing out documents or making physical visits! Payments can also be conveniently made online.
Another significant change is the introduction of a digital visa, replacing the traditional sticker in your passport. This new format, featuring a 2D barcode with cryptographic signatures, enhances security and reduces the risk of counterfeit or stolen stickers.
Visiting the consulate or visa service provider will only be necessary for first-time applicants, those with expired biometrics, or individuals with a new travel document.
The new digital process is expected to reduce visa approval time, and applicants will receive notifications regarding their visa decision. Stay tuned for updates on the implementation of this streamlined procedure!
